2023 Winter Arts Showcase!

MS 131 celebrated our students’ creativity during arts week.  Our visual artists showed both realistic and abstract pieces. Our musicians performed a variety of pieces, ranging from classical to contemporary on instruments as varied as the drums, keyboard, violin, and guitar.  Our digital artists demonstrated incredible skill with 3-D design, and animation.  What an incredible winter art showcase!!!

The Visual Art Showcase:

From Visual Arts Teacher, Mr.Phillips:

MS 131 Visual Arts students were able to display a variety of their work at this year’s Winter Arts Expo. The 6th graders displayed their Fantasy Texture Landscapes. First they designed a series of visual textures and incorporated them into a Fantasy Landscape. They added color using a variety of media to produce totally unique final drawings.

8th Graders displayed their Personal Corporate Logo Designs. First they identified a product or service then developed a design incorporating a graphic image and their initials. They worked through a series of steps to create a finished camera ready piece of artwork.

Visual Arts Enrichment students, consisting of 7th and 8th grade students, learned about Mandalas, which have been used for 1,000’s of years by a variety of cultures. They then designed and created their own individual Mandalas, which they applied color to with a variety of media, including marker, colored pencil, paint marker and paint.

I would like to thank and congratulate all of the Artists whose work was displayed.

KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK !!!

From Music teacher, Mr.O:

The MS 131 music students worked really hard this semester to prepare for their very successful Winter Showcase that took place on December 20th! As part of their preparation, they focused on learning the repertoire for their performance, as well as music literacy skills like sight reading, music theory, and instrument technique. These instruments include piano, acoustic guitar, voice, electric guitar, bass guitar, drums, and violin. The showcase included songs by a variety of artists and composers such as Michael Jackson, Mariah Carey, and Laufey.

The Digital Arts Showcase:

From Digital Arts teacher, Mr.Wang:

2023 Winter Digital Art Show features “Word Art”, “Digital Collage”, “Summer Art”, “Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas”, and “NYC Chinatown” projects. M.S.131 middle school digital art students have been working very hard since September. All digital art projects are made in Adobe Creative Suites including Adobe Photoshop & Adobe Premiere Pro and 3D modeling platform, Tinkercad.com.

Students devoted many weeks to researching, drawing, and composing art statements for each project. By doing multiple digital art projects, students have become more aware of the NYC neighborhoods and communities’ history, Chinese culture in Chinatown, and future technology.

Students learned how to experience the environment differently through contemporary art visions which challenged and refreshed the conventional thinking.
