In collaboration with New York University, our 7th graders spent the last few weeks conducting oral histories to help understand the experiences of those close them. The curriculum taught them how to write great questions, conduct interviews and follow up interviews, and distill the information into a coherent story. Many students focused on parents and family members, whereas others interviewed teachers or neighbors. They all presented to an audience at the culminating event. As one child said, “My relationship with my Dad changed after this. I didn’t really understand him before I interviewed him, and I get him a lot better now.”
